Mastiffs of Merit Proposal - MCONO starts a "Merit Award" Program that recognizes the accomplishments of well rounded Mastiffs.
Perhaps call it the "Mastiffs of Merit" program, like the AKC's breeder of merit program.
Available to member's dogs, and awards given out once a year (at picnic or supported entry?)
Use a "star" system - where they may earn one embroidered star patch for each accomplishment. A satin sash given out with the first star - the MCONO logo on one side, the star(s) on the other. If the dog is present when star is awarded - a framed photo of dog receiving sash/award?
Proposed stars and suggested guidelines (should be discussed, agreed upon) -
1. Conformation star (blue)- when the dog achieves it's AKC or Canadian Ch.
2. Health star (red) - when the dog completes health testing - perhaps Hips and Elbows, CERF, Heart, PRA DNA or parentage, and cystinuria DNA?
3. Temperament star (green) - when the dog completes it's CGC, CGC/TDI, and completes (with proof) 10 or more therapy, school, or meet the breed visits
4. Obedience star (gold) - when the dog completes it's CD (or rally?)
5. Working star (yellow) - when the dog completes it's WD or DD (drafting)
6. Longevity star (white) - when the dog reaches 10 years of age
I've attached rough drafts of what the sashes/stars could look like, and an example of star patches I found for sale on the net.
This is just a proposal, of course - with everything open for discussion and suggestions.
If this is something the club would like to do - I'll volunteer to head the committee.
I think it would give people an incentive to join the MCONO, and it gives members the incentive to to be more proactive with positive promotion of the breed.
Submitted by Kay Stivason

Report of the Commitees:

Ways and Means (Marti Linfert)-
-Raffle item(s) for Supported entry are welcome!
-Proposal to place no-longer-needed and gently used dog items on a page of the website for re-sale. Email of seller would be listed and the club would not be involved in the sale or shipping and would state that we are not liable. We would charge $?? for an item to be placed on the website.

Mitzi moved that we try this on the website to see if it is successful, Webb seconded, approved.

Health- (Tammy Kinkade) I like the “the heart of it all” theme for the specialty!
I had another thought - don’t know the feasibility, but after several people having issues with bitches coming in heat at the specialty and needing to find a repro vet to do progesterone testing, etc... that’s something we should research and put in our premium to go along with closest vet, etc. Also, what about the possibility of having ICSB bring their traveling set up to do collection and freezing? Would think that might be kind of valuable to have at a national specialty? Or am I way off. LOL!
Know that if the club should choose to want to do anything about canine physical therapy for the health seminar, I have a pretty good “in” with this year’s speaker and am quite sure Jeffrey would come and speak if I asked him. Hip Dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, elbow dysplasia, spinal stenosis... pick your poison. So, I’m offering him up if need be!

As for cystinuria DNA tests at the November Supported Entry... I think we should let the rest of the board give their input on if we should just do cheek swabs. I’m fine with what they decide. UPenn prefers both urine and blood. The cheek swabs are not as effective. And yes... lots of 1:1’s coming back positive. Several people are working on an “experiment” with UPenn on diet to see if that changes those positive urine tests. And yes, there are definitely two different types – Dr. Henthorn has been pretty clear in saying they are trying to find a way to identify the 2nd form in DNA or if it is more “environmentally” influenced. We need to decide if we want to do the Cystinuria at the Supported Entry because we still have time to change the Premium List ad.

Chad made a motion that we do our health testing at another event (not Columbus) and it was agreed. Mitzi will inform Tammy that we will not be doing health testing in Nov and that we need to update our advertising.

AKC Committee-(Mitzi reporting) the B Match at the picnic will be our final requirement for step 2 of a 3 step process toward AKC accreditation. We will then start the application process to hold “A” Matches if the club is interested.

Dave made the motion that we go forward with the A matches with the goal of holding a secondary Regional Specialty concurrent with the 2015 Specialty. Gloria seconded, it was approved. Mitzi will see if this is feasible with AKC requirements.

Events Committee- 2013
(May)Basket for Specialty- Theme “Hair of the Dog” . We won! Do we want to donate our winnings back to RFI or GLMR as we have done in previous years? We have not been contacted yet by MCOA with the details as to what $ our winnings are.

Dave made a motion that this money be applied to bringing in a heart Specialist to the 2015 Specialty. This was approved.

Positions up for election this year are V.P. (Dave Henson currently 1st term), Corresponding Secretary (Lucy Parschauer currently 1st term), Treasurer (Teresa Emerson currently 2nd term), Board (Sherrie Hart currently 1st term), Webb Boyles currently 1st term)

Public Education Co-ordinator – Mary Ham
Safety Town is something I have been doing for several years now, which started in conjunction with my job at The New Albany Police Department. I was asked to fill in, and do a presentation when the veterinarian that used to teach that day called at the last minute and could not attend. I have been doing it ever since.
Safety Town is held the last two weeks of June and the second two weeks of July. I teach the animal safety class at Safety Town in New Albany. It consists of two days, 4 sessions per day. I teach about 400 children, ages 4, 5, and 6. I show an AKC video about dogs and how to approach them, how to greet a dog, how to walk away from a dog, and what to do if approached by a strange dog, as well as other safety issues with animals.
Brian and I have taken our mastiffs there for the last 4 years and Maverick has been there all 4 years. We teach the children how to "stand like a tree" and "lay like a rock" for their safety if approached or knocked down by a dog. It is not a "meet and greet" type of day, although they do get to pet the dogs if they want to at the end of class, but is more structured and dogs must be approved to attend. (Maverick has a CGC, TDI, and TT certificate).
We also show a video from AKC about "Best Friends". This video talks about taking care of pets and caring for them. We talk about grooming, vet visits, vaccinations, etc. and we obtain coloring books from AKC that we pass out to all the children.
I have done this for the Dan Emmett Kennel Club and now wish to offer one day to MCONO so we can fulfill our education obligation to AKC for our club. As a Public Education Coordinator with AKC, I am excited to do this program each year. I am always looking for people that might like to attend so if anyone has any questions about the program, please just ask!

Unfinished Business:
Club Incorporation- tabled

New Business:
Proposed Molosser Supported Entry in West Virginia (Kay Stivason and Karen McBee)
Date: June 14-15, 2014
Location: Bridgeport/Grafton ,West Virginia (east of Marietta, OH and southwest of Morgantown, WV) at the Taylor County Fairgrounds on US Rt. 50.
Info: Show will include conformation, obedience, rally and an all breed “B” match (Saturday evening)
Proposal: Molosser Supported Entry featuring Judge Bas Bosch held as part of the Greater Clarksburg WV Kennel Club all breed show. Greater Clarksburg WV Kennel Club to pay room board and judges fee. MCONO would combine with other Molosser breeds to cover costs (DDB, Bullmastiff, Neo, Cane Corso) to bring over Bas Bosch to judge. Total estimated transportation costs (round-trip airfare) are $1,200. This may be more or less. If two additional breed clubs are willing to split costs and support their entry, the estimated cost will be $400 per club. The cost will go down further if even more breed clubs join. Stivasons will take care of judge transportation from airport to show and back.
Discussion was favorable with the total MCONO costs at $400 (pending on at least two other breed clubs agreeing to this). Karen McBee and Kay Stivason are reaching out to other molosser breeds to see if they would be interested in sharing the expenses.
Mitzi is checking with AKC to see if this is an event that would be approved because it is outside our geographical area.

Open Discussion: none

Adjournment: Chad Long

Ways and Means (Marti Linfert)-
-Raffle item(s) for Supported entry are welcome and starting to come in!

AKC Committee-(Mitzi reporting) the B Match at the picnic will be our final requirement for step 2 of a 3 step process toward AKC accreditation. We will then immediately start the application process to hold “A” Matches. We were unable to get any kind of time frame on how long this will take from AKC.

We need to decide on a site for our first A Match. A Matches must be at least 6 months apart and in our geographical area. Locations and times were discussed but Columbus seems to be the best because it falls into the 6 month time frame and we could combine with a Supported Entry.
